So,Peaks and People, what’s it all about? The name of this blog actually says it all. On this blog I would like to do two things. Firstly I want to give you an insight in my outdoor activities. In the first place this means: climbing mountains. Or rather: hiking mountains, since I don’t have the ambition, the courage (nor the budget) to do fancy mountaineering expeditions. Most posts in these category will go about my project to climb the highest peak of every Balkan country (the fascination with the Balkan will become clearer in a moment). But, don’t fall of your chair if I post a story of how I climbed some totally unknown mountain in Armenia.
The magic word has fallen: unknown. This brings me to the second and main goal of this blog: bringing the stories of peoples and cultures that are generally unknown to the general public, but nevertheless have an interesting history (and actuality). Often I will try to focus on groups or cultures that are in some kind of a marginal (albeit not in a negative sense) or frontier position, in that their linguistic, historical, religious or cultural background is different from the rest of the country. If this all sounds very vague to you, I would say: give me a chance and when I publish my first post, all will become clear.
How will I bring these stories? By travelling to the regions in question (yes, this is a travel blog) and telling about my experiences, mixed with some background information about the historical and actual situation of the places I’m going to. One last thing: since I have a background in Slavonic studies, you will notice that a lot of my destinations are located in Eastern Europe, the Balkan and Central Asia, but in the long term I’d like to focus on some other places too.
I’m not (yet) working with a subscribe option, so if you want to stay tuned, please follow my blog on Instagram or Facebook:
Enjoy my blog!
P.S. Maybe you have noticed that I didn’t share my name or picture here. This is because I’d like it to be all about the stories and not about my person (and also because the current picture is a lot nicer than my face).
